What types of discrimination are there
There are many different types of discrimination claims that can be bought. Some of the different claims include:

Time limits to make a claim
There are different time limits that apply to a claimant wishing to lodge a claim for discrimination.
- Queensland Anti Discrimination Tribunal - A complaint must be lodged within 1 year of the events subject to the complaint. There is discretion to extend the time limit in certain circumstances.
- Human Rights and Equal Opportunity Commission - A complaint must be lodged within 6 months of the event subject to the complaint, otherwise the complaint can be dismissed.
- Fair Work Commission - If making a claim for adverse action because of discrimination, within 21 days, if you were terminated from your employment
What compensation can I receive
A successful claimant can claim compensation for non economic loss and economic loss.
Non-economic loss means the hurt, humiliation and distress that a claimant has suffered because of the unlawful conduct.
Economic loss means the money you may have lost or will lose into the future from employment or self employment.
The awards of compensation for non-economic loss have increased dramatically since 2014. In the past, claimants would generally receive between $5,000 to $20,000 for non economic loss.
Since 2014, awards for non-economic loss have increased substantially. There have been cases where claimants have been awarded between $75,000 to $180,000 for non-economic loss
