Commonwealth compensation schemes

If you are a commonwealth employee or a seafarer and have been injured as a result of your employment, it is likely that you will be entitled to recover compensation as result of your injuries.

The procedure for making a claim under the Commonwealth compensation scheme is quite different from State based compensation schemes, particularly those State based compensation schemes that offer lump sum awards of damages.

Under the Commonwealth legislation, upon the relevant insurer accepting liability for your injury, you have an entitlement to receive weekly compensation payments, payment of medical expenses and potentially permanent impairment compensation.

To make a claim for permanent impairment, your injury must be assessed at no less than 10% whole person impairment.

Depending on the severity of your injuries in some cases it is possible to redeem your future entitlements so you can receive a lump sum payment and get on with the rest of your life
